I rarely take sick days for me. I take days off when we have a trip planned, when my kids have something fun at school that I don't want to miss out on, or when they are sick, or when I just need a break. With a husband who is home two to three weekdays each week, I have been able to avoid taking very many days off due to sick kids the last few years and the kids have been pretty healthy.
Fast forward to Friday morning. My son had woken us up a few times the night before crying that his head hurt. I just figured he was having trouble sleeping. I guess I was wrong. He woke up crying. He's five, he doesn't wake up crying anymore. He was complaining about his ear. A lot. He doesn't complain about pain when he has ear infections ever. It was 6:45 am. My husband had left to Oregon at 3:45 am for a guys weekend. My mom wasn't coming over until 7:30. I had no sub plans done at work. I needed to stay home with my son and take him to the doctor. I was stressed.
I text my husband. I text my mom to come over earlier. I started calling substitutes. As soon as my mom got here, I rushed to school and got my classroom set up. A substitute filled the job. And I came back home to this guy.
We spent the day watching movies and playing UNO and memory. I took him to the doctor where she confirmed that he had a pretty bad ear infection. We got some antibiotics that should have him feeling better by the end of the weekend. And hopefully today, he will feel good enough for Happy Feet 2 and In n Out Burger.
It was definitely an unplanned sick day, and stressful at first, but everything worked out and it was nice to have a little break from work.
